AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN FORAGING AREA DISTANCES IN RELATION TO NESTING COLONIES IN NEVADA AND SOUTH DAKOTA
We instrumented 17 American White Pelicans (Pelecanus erythrorhynchos) in Nevada and 10 in South Dakota with Platform Transmitter Terminals (PTTs) and/or VHF transmitters, during the nesting season, to identify foraging areas and associated flight altitude ranges. The instrumented individuals we tracked always moved in flocks with other non-marked pelicans. We occasionally tracked flocks containing one or more instrumented pelicans to, and from, foraging areas in excess of 100 km from their nesting colonies. During foraging flights instrumented pelicans achieved maximum above ground level (AGL) altitudes of approximately 3.0 km and 1.5 km, in Nevada and South Dakota, respectively.

Instrumentamos 17 (_Pelecanus erythrorhynchos_) en Nevada y 10 en el sur de Dakota con Terminales Transmisores de Plataforma (PTTs) y/o transmisores VHF, durante la temporada de nidificación, para identificar las áreas de forrajeo y los rangos de altitud de vuelo asociados. Los individuos instrumentados que seguimos siempre se movieron en bandadas con otros (_Pelecanus erythrorhynchos_) no marcados. Ocasionalmente, seguimos bandadas conteniendo uno o más (_Pelecanus erythrorhynchos_) instrumentados hacia, y desde, áreas de forrajeo excediendo los 100 km desde sus colonias de nidificación. Durante los vuelos de forrajeo los pelícanos instrumentados alcanzaron máximas alturas sobre el nivel del suelo (AGL) de aproximadamente 3.0 km y 1.5 km, en Nevada y el sur de Dakota, respectivamente.
